About Us
Hillsdene Wines first opened their doors on Labour Weekend in 1958. Tom Miles senior was the fifth person in New Zealand to hold a wine liquor licence for a retail bottle store. In those days the only alcohol you could sell was Port, Sherry, and three kinds of wine (Hock, Moselle and Sauterne).
In 1978 Tom Miles Junior stepped into the family business and helped to run the establishment with his parents (Tom and Rita Miles). Over the years the business has moved premises three times – each time in the same block but to accommodate the increasing stock a bigger store became necessary.
Tom's wife Pam eventually joined the family establishment and now she runs the business with help from her daughter (Carolyn) and son-in-law (Doug) with Tom now being semi-retired.
Carolyn handles all the accounts and some administration aspects of the business and also creates the gift baskets. Doug and Pam run the day to day business with the help of some great staff members.
A lengthy involvement in the wine industry has led to extensive wine knowledge. Wine is our interest and focus, so along with the good advice we offer a friendly helpful service.
