The image of bubbly as the "anytime, anywhere, but especially when there is something to celebrate drink" has to be the most successful marketing ploy of all time (after all its just wine with bubbles). However, generations of winemakers (notably the French) have convinced us that it is somehow different, more noble than other mere table wines (mind you we didn't take much convincing - any excuse to legitimise having a good time). If you open a bottle of still Chardonnay at breakfast people would think you're an alcoholic, but cracking a bottle of bubbly is perfectly fine...
